Effective Acne Scar Removal Treatment from Leading Singapore Professionals
Acne scars are often a very distressing condition for many because it changes the appearance of a person’s face and, in severe cases, often affects the self-esteem of those afflicted. In the past, not much was known about the available treatment methods. But in recent times, advances in technology have yielded excellent results in the treatment of this condition.
Having done his Masters in Dermatology from the prestigious St John’s institute of Dermatology, UK, Singapore professional Dr Ho Rui Ming is well versed in acne scar removal procedures and can help to restore your skin as much as possible to its original condition.
“Every scar in itself is different and unique.. and as such, different treatments and techniques will be required to treat each individual scar type…” – Dr Ho Rui Ming
There are 3 main variants of atrophic acne scars:
- Ice pick scars: Small entry point with sharp steep edges; like an inverted triangle
- Box car scars: Wider base, sharply demarcated edges; like a box
- Rolling scars: Wide base, rounded edges
Scars are usually atrophic, meaning they are depressed or have sunken into the skin.
There are many different types of acne scar treatments available and each type of treatment may be applicable to some but not others. As such, a consultation with a medical professional to decide the most appropriate treatment for your acne scars is much advised.
So what acne scar removal options are available?
Venus Viva Radiofrequency Skin Resurfacing
The Venus Viva is the latest revolutionary Radiofrequency (RF) machine that utilises its Nanotechnology to effectively treat different scars with MINIMAL downtime as compared to the traditional CO2 or Erbium laser.
Multiple columns of RF energy are emitted into the scars to break the scar tissue up AND stimulate new collagen. This effectively evens out the scars and improves the texture of the scarred areas.
Treatment is quick (about 30mins) and comfortable!
Some redness is to be expected but by the 3rd / 4th day, only a pinkish-redness will be seen.
A topical anaesthetic cream will first be applied to ensure comfort throughout the process. The Venus Viva RF probe will then be used to create micro-columns of heat within the layers of the skin. Some redness is expected but will subside, and once healed, the skin will have a more even and a smoother texture.
Additionally, there is also a firming effect due to collagen remodelling.

For more severe scars, a more intense Micro-Needle Radiofrequency treatment will be used instead. This method of treatment is unique and highly effective for stubborn/ deep acne scars.
Gold-plated ultra-fine needles first smoothly penetrates deep acne scars before emitting radiofrequency energy to break up the scar tissue and stimulate collagen.
It is a great treatment for deep acne scars that requires deeper penetration of energy and a more intense approach.
Despite being more intensive, downtime is actually still kept to a MINIMAL!
What is the procedure like?
Topical numbing cream is applied beforehand to ensure maximum comfort before the commencement of the procedure. It is a comfortable procedure that takes around 30 mins.
What can I expect after the procedure?
After the procedure, some redness is to be expected but will improve over the next few days. Usually only a pinkish redness is seen after 3 days.
How often can this procedure be performed?
Microneedle Radiofrequency can be performed every 4 – 6 weeks.
How many sessions would I require?
You may already see results after the 1st session! However, subsequent sessions may be required to improve the results even more.
If you have had previous treatments done and feel that your acne scars are at a plateau, then this might be the treatment for you!
This is a method whereby the scar tissue is manually released by using a needle to loosen the scar tissue beneath the skin. This method is sometimes essential in treating certain scar types and is commonly used in combination with other treatment modalities. The most appropriate combination will be advised by Dr Ho Rui Ming.
How is this procedure performed?
First, an anaesthetic is administered to the area that is to be treated to ensure maximum comfort. Then, the scar is released by loosening the scar tissue beneath it via a needle.
The process takes around 30 mins, is comfortable and there is minimal downtime.
Is it painful?
This procedure may look and sound scary, but we have had customers actually fall asleep during this procedure! It is definitely a comfortable procedure.
How many sessions will I require?
It can range from just 1 session to 3 or more sessions.
In certain cases, fillers can be used to fill up depressed scars to smoothen out the skin surface.
Anaesthetic is first administered to the entry point of the area that is to be filled, and then the filler is administered via the entry point to raise the depressed scar.
The advantages of fillers are that effects are seen immediately, and MINIMAL to NO downtime is required.
TCA CROSS Technique
This is a technique where by TCA acid is carefully applied to indiviual acne scars to “fill” up the depression and make the scar less depressed.
This technique is especially useful in Ice-pick scars and some Box-car scars.
The number of sessions required will depend on the severity of the scar.
